AUSTIN – The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Director of the Center for Local Governance, James Quintero, will speak at an Empower Texans touring panel titled “Life, Liberty & Property,” on January 15th in Dallas, and January 16th in Fort Worth. He will discuss Texas local-government taxes, spending, and debt.

“When it comes to achieving prosperity, we know that low taxes, limited government and a fair legal climate are imperative,” said Quintero. “But we often don’t talk about how much a local government can affect our daily lives-our ability to build businesses, pay taxes and engage in personal freedoms. Consider this: Texas’ local governments are mired in debt. Right now, local governments owe more than $7,500 per person and local debt is fast-outpacing population and inflation, 144.4 percent vs. 44.9 percent from 2000 to 2009, respectively. Debt is increasing far faster than communities’ ability to support it, and bonds are often presented to voters at the ballot box without even basic financial information, such as how much a proposal might increase a homeowner’s taxes. If we are serious about securing life, liberty and property for Texans, then we simply cannot gloss over Texas’ growing local debt problem.”
