AUSTIN— Today, the Texas Public Policy Foundation published the policy perspective The Myth of State Disinvestment in Higher Education.

“The conventional wisdom holds that higher education has been suffering from relentless state disinvestment for decades,” said Andrew Gillen, senior policy analyst at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. “But this is a myth – there has not been any convincing upward or downward trend in state funding of higher education over the past 38 years.”

Key Points:

  • There has been no long-term trend of state disinvestment in higher education.
  • State funding for higher education is volatile but has been largely stable for almost four decades.
  • Public colleges have never had more revenues than they do right now.
