AUSTIN— Today, the Texas Public Policy Foundation applauds the commitment to property tax relief expressed through a joint statement released by Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, and Speaker Bonnen.

“Texans demanded bold reform for real property tax cuts and it appears Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, and Speaker Bonnen have crafted a proposal that could achieve this result,” said Kevin Roberts, Ph.D., executive director of the Texas Public Policy Foundation. “We are pleased to hear the plan will dedicate all new sales tax revenue to property tax cuts and takes a strong step toward delivering on their promises.”

“Texans need property tax relief to ensure that they can truly own their property and aren’t paying rent to the government forever,” said Vance Ginn, Ph.D., senior economist and director of the center for economic prosperity at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. “This proposal, along with limiting spending at the state and local levels, will give Texans the relief they need. The penny increase in the sales tax rate is an effective trade-off to provide funding for critical priorities like public safety and education.”
