TPPF Unveils Texas Legislator’s Guide to the Issues Mobile App

Today, the Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) unveiled a new mobile app: Texas Legislator’s Guide to the Issues. The app, available on Android and Apple devices, allows mobile device users to quickly identify key issues impacting state lawmakers. The app is identical to the 2017-2018 Legislator’s Guide to the Issues, a publication that was printed and distributed in September of 2016, and outlines TPPF’s guide to the various public policy issues in Texas.

TPPF Statement on Fitch Ratings Downgrade Threat to Dallas Police & Fire Pension Systems

The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s (TPPF) Center for Local Governance Director James Quintero today issued the following comments in response to yesterday’s statement by Fitch Ratings regarding the Dallas Police and Fire Pension.  Quintero emphasized that unless meaningful pension reform legislation is passed in the 85th Texas Legislative Session, a “multi-notch downgrade” of the City of Dallas’ rating may occur.

TPPF’s Statement on the Texas Comptroller’s 2018-19 Biennial Revenue Estimate

Today, Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar released the report Biennial Revenue Estimate 2018-19that provides the 85th Texas Legislature with an estimate of revenues available to be appropriated for the upcoming 2018-19 budget. Given the state’s constitution requires a balanced budget, this report sets the stage for how much legislators have available for spending and tax cuts in the 2017 Legislative Session that begins tomorrow.

NEXT WEEK: Panel Sessions Announced for the 15th Annual Policy Orientation

The Texas Public Policy Foundation has announced the panel sessions for its 15th Annual Policy Orientation for the Texas Legislature, which begins next Wednesday, January 11, 2017 and runs through Friday, January 13, 2017. This year’s sold-out Policy Orientation takes place at the Sheraton Austin Hotel at the Capitol, and will feature an array of prominent speakers on the major issues affecting the future of both Texas and the rest of the country as we usher in a new Administration.

 The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s (TPPF) Manager for Right on Crime and Senior Policy Analyst Greg Glod was selected to Forbes’s 2017 “30 Under 30” Law & Policy list. The annual selection recognizes America’s most influential leaders in the Law & Policy fields. TPPF Statement on Texas Attorney General’s Amicus Brief in Bone Cave Harvestman Case

The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s (TPPF) General Counsel and Director of the Center for the American Future Robert Henneke issued the following statement on theAmicus Curiae filed by the Texas Attorney General in a lawsuit seeking delisting of the Bone Cave Harvestman from the Endangered Species Act (ESA). TPPF’s Center for the American Future is representing Williamson County resident John Yearwood and Williamson County, Texas in American Stewards of Liberty, et al. v. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, et al., which challenges the authority of the federal government to use the Interstate Commerce Clause to regulate non-commercial interactions with the Bone Cave Harvestman arachnid, which only exists in two central Texas counties, is not bought nor traded in interstate commerce, and does not otherwise affect interstate commerce.

Texas Public Policy Foundation Files Amicus Brief on Plastic Bag Ban

The Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) filed an amicus curiae brief in Laredo Merchants Association v. City of Laredo, Texas which is currently before the Supreme Court of Texas. The brief opposing the City of Laredo’s ordinance that directly contradicts Texas law by prohibiting retailers from providing customers with plastic bags. In August 2016, the Fourth Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Laredo Merchants Association’s case against the City of Laredo’s plastic bag ban, finding that the ordinance is preempted by existing state statute and “unenforceable as a matter of law.”
