Texas’ tax system can sometimes be complicated, opaque, and hard to understand—even for seasoned fiscal policy veterans. But a new effort is underway at the Texas Comptroller’s office promising to see that taxpayers are well served.
Earlier today, the state’s Comptroller unveiled the Texas Taxpayer Bill of Rights, a set of 10 guiding principles that will help steer the agency and better protect taxpayers.
Included in the list:
- Right to Fair and Equitable Treatment.
- Right to Privacy and Confidentiality.
- Right to Understand the Taxes You Pay.
- Right to Pay Only What You Owe.
- Right to Representation.
- Right to Contest a Decision.
- Right to Request a Waiver of Penalty.
- Right to Simpler Tax Filing.
- Right to Courteous, Accessible Assistance from a Real Person.
- Right to Know How Government Spends Your tax Dollars.
Making sure that Texas taxpayers are front-and-center of agency affairs is a commendable move on the part of the Comptroller.
